REGIONAL FOCUS Teamwork and stewardship were displayed at the United Way Soap Box Derby at the CHS refi nery in McPherson, Kan. Whistling Wheels To raise awareness and dollars — and to just have fun — each year the CHS refi nery (NCRA) in McPherson, Kan., hosts an employee event to support United Way. Recently, a soap box derby featured employee teams that built, powered and steered cars in a timed downhill race. Five car-building teams were each given a $50 gift card to help cover costs. Even though it was a windy day, a large number of employees attended to cheer on the teams as the cars rolled down the 1,500-foot path. The wind out of the north was so strong that only two cars had enough steam to cross the fi nish line. The team coached by Pete Hanas, refi nery reliability engineering supervisor, had the fastest time. “The three things I felt we needed to win were good wheels, a good ‘engine’ and a good driver,” says Hanas. “We tried bicycle wheels, but found that wheelchair wheels worked much better. We had a good engine in the combined athleticism of Ed By Dan Kliewer O’Brien, Andy Vogelsberg and Joe Larson. And Orrie Bogner proved to be an excellent driver, taking a good line through the curves. We enjoyed the challenge, especially since it was all to support United Way.” Employees, aided by matching funds from CHS, donated more than $33,000 to United Way for the year. NCRA becomes wholly owned by CHS on Sept. 1, 2015. SEE MORE: Visit chsinc.com/c to watch a video of the derby.
