REGIONAL FOCUS Safety Director Skyler Hayes’ latest of four patriotic murals was recently mounted at Pride Ag Resources, Dodge City, Kan. “Painting is therapy for me and a way to channel my energy,” he says. Patriotic Murals Dot Kansas Landscape When Skyler Hayes tinkers in his garage, it’s not with a pliers and screwdriver, but with a paint brush and canvas. “Five years ago, one of our location managers had two sons in the military and asked if I’d paint a fl ag and ‘Thank You, Veterans’ on a bulk anhydrous tank,” says Hayes, who is safety director at Pride Ag Resources, Dodge City, Kan. “He gave me free rein and I got a little fancier than he expected.” Hayes has just fi nished his fourth patriotic mural (pictured), which took about 40 hours to complete. “It’s not fi ne art by any stretch, but it’s fun to do,” says Hayes, who’s been painting ag-related pieces, portraits and landscapes for almost 30 years. For the past six years, he’s also painted the image that appears on the co-op’s annual calendar. “My goal is to paint a mural for each of our 15 grain and two agronomy locations,” he says. “I’m planning to retire in fi ve years, so I’m going to have to hump to get it done.” The murals are at co-op locations near busy highways, so it’s easy for people to enjoy them. “I’ve gotten emails and letters By Greg Lamp from people saying how much the murals are appreciated,” says Jerald Kemmerer, general manager at Pride Ag Resources. Kemmerer also comes from a family of veterans and adds that patriotism infl uenced the co-op’s rebranding. “The murals thanking our veterans for their service shows loyalty to our country and the pride our employees and members have in our communities,” he says.
