REGIONAL FOCUS The rodeo tests driving skills and maintenance savvy, as well as safety and agronomic knowledge. It also allows participants to examine and test the latest equipment. Applicators Wrangle Big Rigs for Bragging Rights Can you drive a complex piece of equipment across a rolling fi eld while precisely spreading crop nutrients and crop protection products? And do it safely? While monitoring the latest technology? Those are the tests 200 skilled applicators faced as participants in the annual CHS Applicator Rodeo. They matched their agronomic knowledge and equipment operation skills against competitors from across the U.S. Winners received awards and, more important, bragging rights from the August event held at a site near Omaha, Neb. “Events like this highlight skill and knowledge, while providing a real-world way to display professional competency,” says Larry Schermerhorn, vice president, farm supply, CHS Country Operations. “CHS invests signifi cant resources in equipment, training and tracking to ensure our owners and customers have the skilled agronomic expertise essential to helping them grow their businesses,” he says. Application competitions included driving courses that simulate field conditions. Test grounds are mapped with waterways and other obstructions to measure applicator proficiency in accurately applying products By Tom Murray precisely and safely. The event is organized by CHS Country Operations agronomic staff , who partner with equipment suppliers and manufacturers, as well as crop protection business partners. “The CHS commitment to growers includes events like this that allow us to reinvest in our employees and our communities,” adds John McEnroe, executive vice president, CHS Country Operations. “It’s important that we invest not only in equipment and technology, but also in skills and recognition for those who get the job done for producers.” SEE MORE: Visit chsinc.com/c to watch a video about the rodeo.
