Keeping Every Bite Safe Behind the old adage “you are what you eat” is the unspoken promise from those who produce food to those who eat it: We will keep you safe. At CHS, we know that safeguarding food safety is about more than making a promise. It’s about doing everything we can to fulfi ll the all-important commitment from producers to consumers. CHS holds a unique position in the world’s food system. As a farmer-owned cooperative, a leading global grain company and, increasingly, a manufacturer and distributor of food and food ingredients, we’re present on every link in the chain. Every day, we move corn, wheat, soybeans and other commodities grown by farmers on four continents to customers in 65 countries around the world. We’re manufacturing quality feed for U.S. livestock producers. Through our own facilities and those of joint-venture partners, we’re producing a broad range of ingredients for food manufacturers in dozens of countries. And we’re distributing products to restaurants, grocery stores and consumer tables. A strong safety commitment is essential as consumers around the world seek increased knowledge about food sources and handling by production agriculture and manufacturers. As we look ahead to fulfi lling the food demands of a growing global population and emerging middle class, we know those consumers want more than quantity — they want quality and safety. As our business grows, particularly within the value-added food and ingredients sector, so does our commitment. We’re proactively addressing our increased responsibility for food safety with a goal of going beyond meeting regulatory requirements. Our objective is world-class food safety performance. Carl Casale, president and CEO, CHS We’re investing resources and taking steps to achieve this goal in all our food-related businesses. As you’ll read in this issue of C , we’ve added staff who are knowledgeable in quality procedures. Our processing and food ingredients business has opened a new state-of-the-art laboratory. Closer to the farm, our investments in grain origination and export facilities have included laboratory and equipment upgrades. We’re ensuring that our facilities have consistent quality and employee training programs. And many of our locations have achieved Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points and other third-party certifi cations. At CHS, we’ve been helping to feed the world for more than eight decades. We’re looking forward to expanding our presence at the global table — and adding value for our owners. And as we take on that challenge, you can rest assured that safety will be a featured item on the menu. Our objective is world-class food safety performance. Your CHS Connection 5
