THE ON TOPSOIL From 1900 to 2000, worldwide food production jumped 600 percent , while world population grew from 1.7 billion to 6.7 billion. One-third of those people can’t grow or afford to buy enough food to sustain themselves. DIRT About one-fifth of the world’s cropland has been degraded , cutting overall production by about one-sixth. In sub-Saharan Africa, where crop nutrient use is lowest, nearly 1 million square miles of cropland have shown consistent, significant decline .
