REGIONAL FOCUS Austin Sinclair, CHS Propane account representative, left; Russ Head, manager at Quality Propane Inc., center; and Kyle Wolf, CHS Propane account manager examine one of the heaters fueled with CHS propane at the Minnesota Vikings stadium construction site. Keeping Construction Crews Warm Long before the excitement heats up on Twin Cities playing fi elds, it’s a good bet Quality Propane Inc. has helped heat up the stadiums. Providing propane for construction of both CHS Field, new home of the Saint Paul Saints, and the new Minnesota Vikings stadium this season, the company also handled propane for building TCF Bank Stadium, home fi eld for the University of Minnesota football team, and Target Field, where the Minnesota Twins play. “Safety and reliability are critical when providing temporary heat to keep these jobs moving forward,” says Russ Head, manager of the company based in Burnsville, Minn. “Constant equipment maintenance is involved. Our job is to keep the propane tanks and vaporizers working at all times. We eliminate propane equipment failure concerns for the construction companies, just like CHS eliminates propane supply concerns for us.” At the Vikings stadium site — where two huge, fi rst-fl oor building heaters burned about $5,000 worth of propane daily this winter — the company supplied 65 propane tanks and 10 vaporizers to keep construction workers warm and to heat the concrete before and after pouring. “Work at that site has been nonstop. We’ve been fi lling the tanks seven days a week, sometimes twice a day,” says Head. Meanwhile, Quality Propane serviced 11 portable propane tanks at CHS Field in St. Paul. Both job sites faced single-digit temperatures and wind chill factors of 20 below zero, plus relentless pressure to stay on schedule. “CHS automatically monitors our storage tanks and CHS Transportation brings us a load when we need it, which means one less thing for us to worry about,” says Head. “And the Propane Control Room helps us control costs. I use it to monitor supply levels, check prices, and SM By Annette Bertelsen apply loads and contracts from my phone as I work at various sites.” Teamwork between Quality Propane and CHS has spanned 15 years. “Russ is forward-thinking on meeting the demands of these high-intensity projects. He’s built a reputation as the go-to person when you need something done with heat on this scale,” says Kyle Wolf, propane account manager. “It’s been exciting for CHS to play a role in bringing these great stadiums to life. It’s especially thrilling to partner on construction of a fi eld that carries the CHS name.” Q SEE MORE Watch Vikings stadium construction at vikings.com/stadium/new-stadium/webcam.
