Largest Fuel Storage Tank in Montana Under Construction

At the CHS Glendive terminal, construction has begun on a 140,000-barrel (5.9 million gallons) petroleum storage tank. When complete, it will be the largest fuel storage tank in Montana and will double the terminal’s storage capacity.

“This tank will be used for diesel fuel storage to serve farmers, co-ops and other customers,” says Mick Gee, engineering manager, CHS Pipelines and Terminals. “It will allow us to store additional diesel fuel during periods of lower demand, so when spring planting and fall harvesting seasons arrive and diesel fuel needs peak, we’ll have a greater ability to assure adequate inventories.”

The new tank will receive its supply from an 8-inch mainline pipeline system owned by Cenex Pipeline, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of CHS. The system sources refined petroleum products from the CHS refinery in Laurel, Mont. It can also receive product delivered by rail cars unloaded at the Glendive terminal.

In keeping with the CHS commitment to safety, the tank is being constructed according to American Petroleum Institute standards that apply to new steel petroleum storage tanks, says Gee. It’s also being designed and built inside earthen dikes in accordance with National Fire Protection Association standards. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2015 to meet 2016 spring demand.

Ardent Mills Acquires Mondelēz Canada Flour Mill

Ardent Mills has acquired the Mondelēz Canada flour mill located in Mississauga, Ontario. The mill produces hard and soft wheat flour for Canadian bakeries and food manufacturing customers.

A joint venture between ConAgra Foods, Cargill and CHS, Ardent Mills opened in May 2014. Its operations and services are supported by more than 40 flour mills and bakery-mix facilities, along with a specialty bakery and Mobile Innovation Center, all located in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.

The Mississauga mill will support the Ardent Mills vision of being a trusted partner that provides customers with innovative, nutritious grain-based solutions. Ardent Mills also has milling operations in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Montreal, Quebec, plus a bakery-mix facility in Burlington and administrative/sales offices in Brampton, Ontario.

“Acquiring this mill is consistent with our strategy for growth and our desire to help our customers win,” says Dan Dye, Ardent Mills chief executive officer. “The mill has a strong team in place, with passion for the craft of milling. We want to nourish this facility and its people as we serve our Canadian customers and, ultimately, consumers, with safe, nutritious grain-based products. We are excited about this mill’s future as we leverage our innovation and supply chain capabilities.”
