From Deckhand to Operations Manager
Early in his career, Jeffrey Hess envisioned working his way up from tugboat deckhand to captain.
But when an opportunity arose to manage a rock-and-lime yard in Lettsworth, La., he put his navigational skills to work to improve operational efficiencies and top-line customer service. He stayed close to the river later, when he began managing a dry fertilizer facility in Alexandria, La.
Now, with 25 years’ experience in the fertilizer industry, Hess is operations manager, overseeing the terminal and its warehouse, along with six other warehouses in Louisiana and Mississippi, which CHS purchased in February 2014.
“We make sure our customers get in and out of the terminal as quickly as possible and provide them with a constant supply of good, reliable, high-quality plant nutrients,” he says. “The number-one rule is that if you don’t take care of your customers, somebody else will, so we go above and beyond to meet their needs. If that means loading a truck at midnight or coming in on a Sunday at 6 a.m., we’re here. We do it.”
