Planted acreage totaled 97.15 million acres in 2012, 5.2 million more than was planted in 2011 and 3.56 million more than the recent peak in 2007. Analysts, including Informa Economics, are forecasting an even larger acreage in 2013, nearing the 99-million-acre mark. “Strong returns in corn have resulted in increased corn plantings every year since 2008. In 2012, acres were the highest since the 1930s,” reports Tim Emslie, research manager, CHS Hedging. “However, corn-intensive rotations will get a hard look in terms of overall moisture requirements if soil moisture is short.” Corn is the money crop and provides more profi t than soybeans in all types of crop rotations, adds Gary Schnitkey, University of Illinois farm management specialist.
