A saker falcon named Willow is about to take fl ight from a tower at the CHS McPherson refi nery to help control starlings. SEE MORE By Dan Kliewer Willow patrolled above the refinery for a couple of hours each evening at dusk, returning occasionally to her handler for a treat. To reinforce Willow’s natural threat, employees on “bird patrol” pointed high-powered green lasers at refi nery towers and equipment. There was a dramatic reduction in starling activity after just a few nights. Four weeks later, they were seeing only a few starlings a day. Willow has helped discourage unwanted birds from fl ocking at other sites, including parking garages, tourist attractions and other refi neries.
