Refinery Rainbow A rainbow set off against a darkening evening sky crowns the National Cooperative Refinery Association (NCRA) refinery at McPherson, Kan. CHS is majority owner of the 85,000 barrel-per-day refinery that supplies diesel fuel and gasoline to cooperative and other refined fuel retailers throughout the central United States. About two-thirds of the refinery’s crude oil supply comes from Kansas. Both NCRA and the wholly owned CHS refinery at Laurel, Mont., have undergone extensive upgrades in recent years to remain environmentally and economically sustainable. Projects under way at NCRA are working to reduce benzene content and increase use of heavy crude oil.
