CARVING A CANAL Panama Canal construction is adding a third channel that in 2014 will nearly triple the size of grain-carrying cargo ships able to pass through on the way to Asia and beyond. Expansion of the Panama Canal will add to Gulf of Mexico competitiveness, but probably won’t affect global trade patterns for the foreseeable future.
